Naratiunea este construita sub forma unui colaj de scrisori, insemnari de jurnal si articole de ziar, oferind o perspectiva intima si fragmentata asupra evenimentelor. In centrul actiunii se afla Jonathan Harker, un tanar avocat englez trimis in Transilvania pentru a-l ajuta pe contele Dracula intr-o tranzactie imobiliara. Calatoria sa prin peisajele pitoresti, dar nelinistitoare ale Europei de Est, este insotita de avertismentele localnicilor si de superstitii legate de spiritele raului.
